
Shelith W. Hansbro is an executive leader with more than 20 years of experience in corrections, public administration, and organizational strategy. She advises on policy development, operational effectiveness, workforce engagement, and reentry initiatives that strengthen systems and improve outcomes across public sector environments.
She brings extensive senior leadership experience from the Illinois Department of Corrections, where she has served in executive roles supporting statewide operations, strategic initiatives, and policy development. In her role as Confidential Assistant to the Director, she serves as a trusted representative of the Director, communicating executive priorities and providing strategic guidance informed by deep, facility- and system-wide operational knowledge. She works closely with executive leadership on departmental priorities, crisis response, and systemwide initiatives, including workforce engagement and organizational development strategies.
Shelith previously served as Warden and Chief Administrative Officer of the Decatur Correctional Center, where she managed a multi-million-dollar budget and led facility operations for a unique population of incarcerated women, including mothers and infants. Her leadership advanced trauma-informed and gender-responsive approaches that supported rehabilitation, family reunification, and successful reentry outcomes.
Her broader experience includes leadership in program operations, community engagement, and public affairs across state and local government agencies. She has also gained specialized experience at Taylorville Correctional Center, where she developed and implemented programming and operational strategies for specialized offender populations. In addition, she has provided oversight of external consulting partnerships, including contract management and coordination on initiatives supporting targeted assessments and system improvement efforts within the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Shelith contributes to national leadership and training initiatives through the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), including communications training and curriculum development for women’s leadership programming. She also serves in executive leadership roles within professional associations, including Vice President of the Illinois Correctional Association and Training Chair for the Association of Women Executives in Corrections, where she supports leadership development and professional advancement in the field.
She has participated in the Prison Fellowship Warden’s Exchange Program and has delivered international presentations in New Zealand, contributing to global dialogue on corrections leadership, rehabilitation practices, and organizational development.
Shelith holds a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Illinois Springfield and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Northern Illinois University. Her work has been recognized with numerous honors reflecting her commitment to leadership, innovation, and public service impact.
